India has thousands of web design companies and freelancers, and their prices range from a few thousand rupees to several lakhs for what sounds like the same thing. Choosing the wrong one can cost you months of delays, a website that never brings customers, or even losing control of your own domain. This 12-point checklist will help you choose with confidence.
1. Look at real, live work
Ask for links to live websites, not just screenshots. Open them on your phone. Are they fast? Easy to use? Do they look professional? A strong portfolio in your industry is a good sign.
2. Talk to a past client
A confident agency will happily connect you with a previous client. Ask about communication, deadlines and support after launch.
3. Get a fixed, written quote
The quote should list the number of pages, design approach, features, timeline and price. Vague quotes like “website – ₹15,000” often lead to extra charges later. See what a clear breakdown looks like on our pricing page.
4. Custom design or template?
Templates are cheaper and faster; custom design looks unique and fits your brand. Both are valid – but you should know which one you are paying for.
5. Mobile performance
Most of your visitors will be on mobile. Ask how the agency ensures fast loading and a good mobile experience, and test their previous sites on your own phone.
6. SEO basics included
A website that Google cannot understand will not bring traffic. At minimum, you should get proper page titles and descriptions, clean headings, a sitemap, Google Search Console setup and fast loading.
7. Who owns the domain, hosting and code?
This is the most important question. The domain should be registered in your name, and you should receive admin access and hosting credentials. If the agency keeps control, moving away later can be painful.
8. Can you update the website yourself?
Ask whether you will get an admin panel to change text, photos and prices without paying for every small change.
9. Timeline and process
A good agency explains its process: consultation, quote, design approval, development, testing and launch. For a standard business website, 1–3 weeks is typical once content is ready.
10. Support after launch
What happens if a form stops working next month? Ask how long free support lasts and what a maintenance plan includes.
11. Communication
Will you talk directly to the designer and developer, or only to a salesperson? Direct communication usually means fewer misunderstandings.
12. Red flags to avoid
- A guarantee of “#1 ranking on Google” – nobody can guarantee rankings
- No live portfolio or references
- Insisting on registering the domain in their own name
- Refusing to put the scope and price in writing
- An unusually low price with charges for every small extra
